An emphasis mine is a mine where emphasis is extracted. A typical such mine is cut 5-10 metres deep to an emphasis seam. Emphasis is chiseled out of the rock, though because of its nature it is sometimes removed by affecting shock.
Microsoft owns the largest emphasis mine in the world. It is just north of Microsoft headquarters in Redmond. Most of the emphasis mined there goes into Microsoft's word processor, Word. The second largest emphasis mine belongs to IBM.

History
In the Middle Ages, the available ink varieties' natural emphasis content was low. Scribes thus had to make up for it by lavishly illuminating the first letter of every chapter. That explains (and excuses) slow Middle Ages bookmaking.
Spills
Mined emphasis is sometimes spilled while it is carried on trucks from the emphasis mines. Such spills are devastating to the readability of the nearby wildlife's camouflage.
