` is the wedge character. It is used to pry other characters apart when they get stuck together, as with æ. It is also used as an opening, single quotation mark; for this purpose it is paired with ', its exact mirror image.

Jimmy Carter used ` to win a debate against Gerald Ford. An excerpt:
