Part 1: The Telemachiad

  • Stately, Captain Arthate was drunk, falling down on all the stairs as he peered down from the top of the stairs. Bearing a bowl of hot water with a razor placed crossed. His hair was in 2 twist curls and the clothes that draped his thin frame trailed behind him as a tail. The image of the death was sharp and clear in the morning sunlight. From the harbor below, sounds of bells, calls, and water floated up to the liquid sky. For a moment the world was still. And then Arthate called out for the young man in the parlor.
  • "Show yourself, switchblade. Show yourself, you lazy atheist."
  • Unwashed and sober, Stephen Villain appeared at the foot of the staircase. Dressed in white, he glanced with slanted eyes up to the drunk Arthate. Arthate smiled at the young blade’s displeasure. He had him lost in the woods, never to find his way out of the darkness that was the sorrow in his bloated soul.
  • "You honor her death with filthy and sloth, but you refused to pray for her immortal soul."
  • Stephen's mother: dead in the ground for over 5 years. Stephen had not taken a shower or brushed his teeth in all that time.
  • Trotting down the steps, sloshing gasoline on the banister, Arthate made a cross to honor the old man, the young man, and the phantom. Grinning, his gold teeth glowed in the hate that Stephen felt.
  • "You did it wrong. I am just as desperate as you, but you could have faked it for her."
  • In the tower above, Snicket was still asleep. An Englishman here on business, Snicket was prone to violent nightmares involving wild animals. Arthate was flushed with worry that Snicket would get the keys to the gun locker and, in a dream of nightmare intensity, murder both himself and Stephen while they were away in the land of sleep.
  • "You need to keep an eye on him, Stephen. He could be very dangerous."
