The Problem With Illogicopedia
Hindleyite, I was talkin' with some peeps on IRC. And they expressed the, in my opinion, correct view that Illogicopedia, despite the effort that goes into it looks juvenile and not-very well put together. Which they said was off putting to new users. We came to several conclusions, and decided you're a good man to oversee or help us with the task of renovating the site and taking us into a new age. Mainly because you're always there, and you've seen Uncyclopedia grow up into the highly editable site that is, and also how it went wrong. Which gives you life experience, well, wikia experience.
Anyway, here are the realisations we found:
- We could perhaps redesign the main page, perhaps only slightly to make it look better done/funnier etc. Do it professionally. Bear in mind there are some good photoshoppers/puns to be used out there.
- Personally I think the mission statement and guidelines are outdated and untrue. We're not really about nonsense and one liners anymore. It seems to me that we're going for anything that seems funny, or occasionally clever. Generally if there is some sort of point, like a conclusion, a thread of plot, or even an instance of funny in an article it seems tosay. "the goal is not necessarily "nonsensical one-liners" as much as "anything funny" whereas Uncyclopedia tries for "satire", you guys try for "funny." Not that I'm saying we should do an uncyclopedia and become solely funny or anything, but maybe emphasising that our site is made for the articles we so often praise and reward users for: the well-written/funny and clever. Our mission statement and commandments should reflect this.
- Maybe a slight revamp of the rules and guidlines, not to change the status quo, but to encourage users with the intelligence and maturity that should at least double that of an EDer.
- We must tackle the Did you know section too, it just lies there dead, stinking up the wiki. Could we replace it with something.
- Another poin raised was the advertising and vanity (guilty as charged) that one finds in "What's Gwa'nin." I'm not sure what to do with it, set out guidlines? Try and make things look like they're news regardless of the article they link too (like on the news section in logicopedia [the brief wikiskin])
So yeah. If we tackle the root cause, as opposed to the articles we'll kill the weeds dead improve our image and attract more users. I think we can win with this one. -- 18:34, 4 Aym 2008 (UTC)
- Some good points. The front page: I like the fact people can edit bits but I think the news thing should refer to articles and not mention users unless totally necessary. A good idea would be to check every so often (not really that hard to do) and modify it slightly to fit in with the idea. DYKs: same goes for this. I like to add a few things every now and then but we do need some more content. I'll comment a bit more on this later, I think. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 18:42, 4 Aym 2008 (UTC)

- Cheers for the support du' . 'll set about implementing these steps. Nice work with the blog once again, and just well done in general. Tell me if \i go wrong, give me a lollipop and send me on my way :P --
- Front page redesign. For all its bad points, one area where I think Uncyc excels is on its front page. It seems there's something new there every day - it would be nice to try and emulate this a bit more. I'm not saying we should restrict users' own content, just modify it slightly. We always have the vandalism section for all-out madness. As for a redesign, it might be worth having a fresh look... might need to discuss with Fluffalizer - an almost direct port of WP would be nice. It took ages for us to get to the current design but if we work together we could do it fairly quickly.
- I also wonder if there is any way we can move/get rid of the Google ads like Uncyclopedia? I dunno if it's site specific css or something. Maybe we could get Fluffalizer (again) on it...
- Rules: always been a bit of a sticky area because there aren't really any rules as such, only guidelines. I wouldn't be against a slight tweak though.
- Finally, the site's mission statement. I agree that one-liners aren't the stock articles any more and whilst they are still accepted, a change of intro text might be in order. Hm, I remember Nerd being a bit touchy about that - we need to pick a slogan between us.
- Ljlego: know much about css? -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 19:06, 4 Aym 2008 (UTC)
- Not really, though I am excellent at pretending I know things and using Google to write code. I learned parser functions in this way, and oddly enough I'm actually quite good at them now.-Ljlego 20:31, 4 Aym 2008 (UTC)
- So main points:
- Sort out mainpage
- Sortout, better advertise the forum
- Create activity ourselves on various topics forum etc.
- Tidy up in general, mission statement etc? -- 19:37, 4 Aym 2008 (UTC)

- Sounds about right. Forum topic for this?
- LJ: Pretending to know things = my mantra. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 10:28, 5 Aym 2008 (UTC)
- As for the site focus, I can agree with expanding our official "mission". Not moving it, though – while we need not strictly be limited to it, sheer nonsense remains the unique part of our niche. Without it, we are just a poor copy of the humor wikis. Also, we could do well to encourage creating more one-liners and random nonsense – let's then use said content! A little bit of true nonsensical creativity is valuable; far too much of our content has become a mechanical repetition of stale comedy routines. I suggest to encourage the nonsensification of our content, where users work to make it stranger and funny as in the smell. The focus on quality has been a bit one-sided: it has replaced the focus on the bizarre and random more than it has complemented it. I say they need not be mutually exclusive; let those (the "old school") who want to write some random nonsense here and there do so, and encourage it, and those of the newer style do their thing as well at the same time. Also, reward not only polished humor, but the truly bizarre and unshaven as well!
- As for redesign, I guess I can help given some concrete ideas. So discuss it; how about starting a forum topic to collect some more input on just how to improve things? Let anyone add any minor suggestions and/or complaints, and all that is feasible and doesn't make things worse can be done, bit by bit. As for the wiki ads at the side, that's something you'll have to speak with Wikia about.
- Also, as for the site being juvenile, is this mainly a form or content issue? I've noticed that there are quite a few {{q|Bla bla bla.|Page redirecting to user| on whatever}} added to pages. I think this could do with a staunch chopping and/or replacement. I for one would like to see less categories and quotes about users. And less of all those mostly-unused templates with images; those are often unfunny and non-strange, as well as slightly or even significantly "juvenile". Could do with a cleaning there, I think. Also, dropping in mentions of nasty things and people without a point in our content looks very much juvenile; unlike Nerd42, I don't mind seeing it where it makes a point, but where it doesn't (which is quite often) I must say I'd like to see him come around and prude up our pages for a bit. Not because I find it nasty, but because I find it stale. --Fluffalizer 11:39, 5 Aym 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, forum topic needed I reckon. Don't want to become all Cabalish like Uncyc....
- User vanity is, in places, becoming a bit MySpace-ish and over the top but I think we've got this largely under control - as soon as I find some vanity I try and modify it. Some other stuff can't really be retrieved but we don't have much complaints on the vanity deletions.
- Something I noticed: the Google ads aren't on the web archive versions of the site... -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 11:57, 5 Aym 2008 (UTC)

Hey
Someone mentioned an award for feat images, so I've made it. It's the same mechanics as gold stars but with brushes. Check it out: Template:Gold Brush -- 13:09, 24 Yoon 2008 (UTC)
- Seems OK but some golden brush icons instead of the stars might be nice. You may want to take a look, but unless you've got something else to add, I believe we've finished The Wikia Olympics
- If it's done do you want to put it up for review, & maybe i was lieeeek thinking that we could create a small award template etc for reviews to encourage reviewers. What do you think? Nice admining btw. --
- Hm, didn't get the chance/inspiration to add as much as I'd like to have but I think we ought to draw a line under it. If it were any longer it'd be bigger than much of the stuff at Uncle Pete! Good work on it, by the way. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 17:12, 27 Yoon 2008 (UTC)

IllogiClassics #??: Silent Penguin)
Despite the obvious vanity surrounding the idea of a user becoming an IllogiClassic, I believe Seppy makes an exception... just for the hseer volume of featurettes he makes in articles.
One of the site's creators, and proclaimed IllogiGod, Silent Penguin is notorious for cropping up in articles across the wiki. Famously playing himself he usually ends up in some kind of tangle that pokes fun at his muted features. Seppy as of yet hasn't commented on hisc numerous appearances, though it is often observed users including him in their stories disappear without a trace soon after.
Seppy's Filmography
- Penglish uprising
- The Massive quest to find stuff
- Silent Penguin's Bogus Journey
- Silent Penguin
- Battle with Flameviper
- Invasion of Illogiland

The welcoming committee is the latest part of a plan to get Illogic into the Wikia spotlight and I decided that some of the site's organ-isation needed a kick up the buttocks. But then, you shouldn't take me on because I'm just yak. Still not happy with that star template, though... -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 10:44, 29 Yoon 2008 (UTC)
- What's wrong with the star template? I like it, it only needs a little time to establish itself. --
- Nothin as such is wrong with the template but I was thinking of resurrecting it to be the primary reward system again. Admins can award stars for various things such as helping clean up/categorise pages, tag images, blah blah as well as regular features. Zen, we have a 'ranking' thingymajig based on number of stars achieved, giving users incentive to do constructive stuph. Ima gonna work on a category system now, actually. Is Lord Of Commons still in practice, or has it died/need reviving/have no use anymore? --
16:31, 29 Yoon 2008 (UTC)- It's fallen out of use mainly because of THE BIASED VIEWS
of the Strangled Cat Party. Dunno, I think people aren't interested in taking sides and joining parties any more. Maybe it'd cause divides or something. Now, if we were all of the same party (up against Uncyc and Wikipedia) that would be different... -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 17:04, 29 Yoon 2008 (UTC)
HINLDLES!
HEllo! I need advice. Welll.... I'd like to have a featured image, but I don't know which one has the best chance. I need a worthy opinion. Regarding Wikia
They got back to us, here's what they said -
"Hi. Illogicopedia looks like a very well-organized wiki with a lot of content and you guys have certainly worked hard on it. I'm impressed that you only have a very few uncategorized pages and I'm glad to see you taking welcomes so seriously! However you are not currently using Monaco skin as a default and that is one of our spotlight criteria. I appreciate that you actually try to make the wiki nice for both monobook and monaco users, but we need the default (seen by the anonymous users who make up the bulk of the viewership) to be monaco and not the other way around. So right now I have to say no to your request. -- Wendy (talk) 01:41, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)"
- :S -- 07:12, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)
- Bah, that's annoying. I did note that all criteria have been worded 'should', as in 'should be Monaco' but I expected them to make an exception in this case where we're a parody of Wikipedia. Cheeseballs! Granted, I need to get my head round Monaco (spits on floor) formatting so I can make it look better. It's one ugly barsteward I tells ya - a skin only a mother (Wikia) could love. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 10:12, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)

Have you seen this, monaco sucks, and the adverts, the adverts!?!?!?!!! I say we do a Cuba and outright refuse to make the switch. -- 07:43, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'd definitely rather not get featured Wikia than use Monaco. --
TRAVIS!Ryan! File:Travis.gif Ahoj 08:52, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)- Ryan, have you seen the adverts they propose to use, it's like a freaking crater on each page, it's just not cricket. --
- What? I didn't say I supported these ads or anything... I said the exact opposite... --
TRAVIS!Ryan! File:Travis.gif Ahoj 10:28, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)- Look, I remember the debate when we first moved to Wikia. The options were: 1) stay at the smelly wikifarm, 2) move to Wikia or 3) put up the cash for our own hosting. The latter would mean banner ads and much begging for cash to pay our hosts. We're actually rather lucky we have someone that does this for us. Having said that, Monaco cheeses me off big style. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 10:46, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)
- Monoco is shocking, to me, it feels like wikia are pulling a microsoft esque action by ignoring what people say, and using what they think people want insted. i say we make a hell of alot of noise about it, and should we fail, try to find an alternative to wikia. After all, they dont own the site, they simply provide the hosting, but they don't seem to realise that the more they chock the sites with ads, the more people will ignore them. sure, they may get the extra idle click, but ads become invasive.--<css>

- The Monaco fiasco all stems from the advertisers, the guys that give not a sh*t about what we think: all they are motivated by is money. Wikia has to play middle man by trying to get a balance on both sides (users and advertisers), a layout everyone is happy with - I won't be happy until we get Monobook back though.
- The alternative is move to our own hosting servers. One thing I am unhappy with about Wikia is that it feels like 'they' own the site, when, as you said, they do not. Well, you get that impression waaaaaay more in Monaco with all those Wikia logos plastered everywhere. Also, if we had an independent wiki we could customise skins all we wanted. Downside is having to stump up the cash each month to keep the site online all the time - which comes out of our own pockets. Otherwise we'd have to beg for investment - not ideal when we're aiming to be bigger than Wikipedia :-p
- In conclusion, I am willing to stay with Wikia for now but the sooner we can establish an independent site the better.
- Just a last word about Wikia, I dunno about you guys but it's very easy to get the feeling they do not care about us. And that's probably right. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 15:58, 2 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)
- I've always felt they neglect us. Maybe because they were so irked by the idea of us at the start --
- This has been the case for ages, still, hopefully we can figure something good out, maybe this is something we need to discuss with all the admins. Lets have a Crisis meeting :P find out when all the admins can get online to irc or something to discuss the sites future, figure out an action plan, and yes, it feels like wikia owns the place, they always tell us what we can and can't do.--<css>

- Yeah, it's cos we're anti-establishment. They said it'd never work and only took us on, reluctantly I might add, when they saw how popular the site was getting at Editthis. Power to the people (dons banana bandana)! To add to the argument above, how much extra traffic do you think we get being a Wikia wiki (through Big Wikis page, other Wikia wikis)? I'd say about 10% more (estimate), so that's something to think about.

- That sucks. The idea of going independent has always been appealing to me, dunno about you but it gives a sense of more ownership - ie we aren't governed by what wikia thinks. I've got misgivings about free hosts as I've never tried them myself but I was thinking bandwidth limits might be an issue with paid hosts (I dunno, would 1Gig a month be enough for a wiki of our size?) - not a problem at wikia as they sorted everything out. Course you know, it would mean more effort on our parts ;). Begging for donations might be the only way to keep the site going through rocky periods. I'd be willing to put some cash towards the costs, should it come to that. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 18:03, 4 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)
- Well, Our website has a DB size, discounting images of around 8 or 9 mg. So the base versions linode (Dedicated visual RAM:360mb, Diskspace:12GB, transfer limit:200GB/month, $20/month) and WiredTree offer (Dedicated visual RAM:384mb, Diskspace:40GB, transfer limit:600GB/month, $45/month) are ample for ours, and most likely several other websites needs (hence the suggestion of sharing costs. These two providers are non contract, meaning we arn't tied down to them for longer than what we pay for. WiredTree is slightly better, and we have a managed control panel, and Linode is empty, we have to manage everything ourselves unlike WT, but both provide fantastic reliability. We can also create a script that prevents images being downloaded and uploaded should the transfer limit becomes a bit tight. Asema thinks Wikifur and nerd42 suggested that the adventure wiki on EditThis might be interested in going solo. But freehosts usually arn't worth bothering with, they are like editthis was, more pain than they are worth.--<css>

how and when do i become an admin? --HUGE BOB 10:24, 6 Jumbly 2008 (UTC)
- We aren't looking for any more admins at the moment because we have enough for our size of wiki. Plus, being an admin ain't all that different to being a regular user - we only get about 1 vandal a week and there's not that much stuff to delete (we try and keep all we can). Ideally we'd want a new admin to be sensible and know the site's guidelines and policies well - we can't just go around promoting anybody, y'know! :-P
